Heph (Masters Thesis Project)

Heph is my thesis project I created for my masters degree in game analysis and design. Heph can be described as a queer narrative god fighting deck builder game. It is meant to be an exploration of queer narrative mechanics in games, and carries a sort of hopeful queer power fantasy vibe.

Heph in its current form is a singular scene created with multiple different ‘deviations’ that change the way the narrative of that scene gets communicated and interacted with. This can influence both its structure and the experience of playing through the scene itself, and thus the greater narrative context. It was made in particular to explore the ways it is possible to queer narrative structures and systems within digital games. These ‘deviations’ are thus built upon specific queer themes, such as: queer desire, and queer failure.

It is made in Unity, and uses Inkle for its narrative components.

Once I finish with my masters thesis, my plan is to continue working on Heph to make it a fully formed game in my spare time.
